Men's Championship Wrap Up

North Carolina are your men's national champions for 2015.  They opened up group play with a 2-2 draw over Cal Poly and a win over Iowa State 2-0 to finish 2nd in their group.

North Carolina had a strong start in bracket play with a 4-1 win over Michigan.  They played a tough battle with Central Florida in the quarterfinal which ended with an own goal in extra time that saw North Carolina go through.

An even tougher battle came in the semifinal against Illinois which featured a line clearing save by North Carolina and 2 powerful crossbar direct hits just in the first half.  The rest of the way saw them play to a 0-0 after extra time. North Carolina had the early advantage in the Kicks from the Mark phase when Illinois missed their first attempt. North Carolina had a chance to advance but could not put the 5th shot home.  An opening came in the 9th round when Illinois missed.  This time North Carolina did not miss and won the Kicks from the Mark phase 8-7.

The final got off to a quick start with a goal in the 5th minute to put North Carolina ahead.  With Penn State pressing the entire match for an equalizer an opening was created late in the match which saw North Carolina slot home the insurance goal in the 80th minute to win the match 2-0.

North Carolina was led by tournament MVP Pearce Veazy and most outstanding goalkeeper Murat Calikoglu.  Alex Requarth, Brett Griffith and Eric Rossitch rounded up their placing on the all tournament team with their performances.

The rest of the All Tournament team includes:

Women's Championship Wrap Up

Michigan State are your women's national champions for 2015.  They opened up group play with a 1-0 victory over Colorado "Gold" and a draw with Kansas 1-1.

Michigan State had wins over North Carolina (1-0) and Florida (2-0) to begin bracket play.  Then the fun began.

In the semifinal vs. Virginia Tech, they went down 1-0 early, tied it, a minute later went down again and tied it in the 2nd half.  This led to extra time in which they prevailed 3-2.

The final was a tough battle with Colorado State. Each team had chances that were not put away. It was a 0-0 score heading to extra time.  In the 4th minute of extra time, Danielle Manning found the ball in the box and slotted it home to win the national championship.

Michigan State was led by tournament MVP Danielle Manning and most outstanding goalkeeper Katie Foss.  Samantha Chouinard, Grace Noyola and Margaret Galea rounded up their placing on the all tournament team with their performances.

Blog Guidelines

For those new to the blog, please allow me to post a few blog guidelines I try to follow.

The blog is live-ish.  Since the blogger can't be at 14 fields at once, we mainly post game starts and final scores. So no game updates or halftime scores. I'll also try and post funny items from time to time, it mostly won't work :).

Championship divisions will get more priority over the open division but we will post all info as soon as I get the info.

The blogger will have other duties as assigned and I will try my best to post when the next blog post will be.

The blogger has a *the Twitter account (@NIRSASoccerBlog).  I will post a few more things from time to time and may have more time to post updates in the Championship Division only.

The goal is to give you a little insight on what is going on at the tournament for our teams here and for fans, family and friends back home.

Good luck to all teams as we are finally underway!

* I was trying to be funny there.  See it didn't work :)
